Romeo &
Juliet Dances & History
I started the business 12 yrs ago as a phone in matchmaking club.
Made a lot of friends and contacts who wanted to meet me and all of the members
in person. The matchmaking club evolved into dances, from a club member’s
suggestion several years later. The first event was in March. It was during one
of the worst snow storms of the year, at a bar, on a Thursday Night. Over 200
people attended! A local police officer was shocked to see what would make so
many people come to an event in the weather conditions like that, so he had to
drop by for a visit to see what was going on!
The dances have be running for roughly 10yrs at a variety of
locations. I felt bad not providing the personal matchmaking anymore due to
working on the dances, in turn I provided a free online dating site. I am a
romantic and matchmaker at heart so I thought “Romeo & Juliet” would be the
perfect name for the business. I can not ever picture doing anything else.
We have many theme dances throughout the year like Zodiac Night, Halloween Parties and
Valentine’s is an all time favourite. My goal at the dances is to help
people mix and mingle and that is usually done with icebreakers. Games to help
people approach each other. For example a lady will receive a red playing card
and if she finds her matching black card, held by a gentleman in the room, she
gets to enter a draw to win prizes. The same with the men. I use a number of
tools to help singles mix and mingle. Famous couples icebreaker is another one.
Ladies pick a famous name, as do the men. One Gentleman might be Brad Pitt and
he maybe looking for Angelina Jolie.
The service is valued and provides singles with the opportunity
to expand their social life and receive support from those who attend. I have
seen many singles who have recently went through long term break ups who have
completely changed. Became happy, outgoing and thrived after a loss. What I do
is not a lucrative business but the rewards are pretty large to me. I watch
newly single people come out of their shell, learn to embrace single life, plus
the rewards of seeing many people match up, fall in love and share a life with
someone. There are too many successes to keep track of. Often when I am out and
about in the community people approach me and thank me. They tell me they found
someone through the services. Not a lot of people email their success
stories but I do often hear it.. and nothing could be more rewarding than that.
We have singles from Kingston, Cobourg, Peterborough and all over
who attend. The dances will be changing locations in the upcoming future due to
the sale of the Belleville Legion. Singles will need to join the website to
receive information of when and where we will be providing events. Singles can
view our party pictures online. For new singles we have a “Friendship table” at
the dance, and Volunteer John will always save a seat beside him, and help make
singles who come alone feel more comfortable. Romeo and Juliet is not just a
dance like many people think, it offers quite a bit more. They have changed many
peoples lives. It is a warm, friendly, safe, environment and helps many with
making a big life transition.

Dance Rules:
The Big No-No's: No ball caps. No pets. No flashing. No
drinks on the dance floor. No arguing. No Inebriation.
The Little No No's:
Gentlemen please have a seat versus standing around the bar. It makes the ladies
uncomfortable when they go up to get a drink. Please do not smoke too close to
the entrance as this breaks the city bi-law as well.
